Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Omar Abdi pointed to “small moments of relief” for children and their families fleeing the war in Ukraine, with civilians being evacuated from Mariupol and other frontline locations.

However, he said the situation in the country remains “grim” and that those fleeing the conflict have told humanitarian workers of “their living hell.”

Russia’s ambassador said during the meeting that since the beginning of May, more than 190,000 children have “come to Russia” and that it is working to place unaccompanied children “temporarily with Russian families." He said they are also working to facilitate the adoption of these children.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN suggested at the outset of his speech that Russia treat the day’s proceedings as “pre-trial hearings” for the alleged war crimes Russian forces have committed in Ukrainian cities such as Bucha.

He also raised concerns about reported “filtration camps,” claiming that name is merely a euphemism for concentration camp.
