Ghada Eltahir Mudawiwill, UN Deputy Director, operations and advocacy division, office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said Tuesday that survivors of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria “have the right to be angry” following criticisms over delays in aid reaching communities in need.

She said although the first aid and rescue efforts were “not on time,” efforts to reach those in need are underway. Mudawiwill explained that the crisis in Turkey and Syria is a “rare situation” where those sending aid are also directly impacted by a disaster.

She said some UN colleagues had lost family members or had spent the night in cars or on the street because of the earthquake on Monday.

Monday's earthquake was centered in the town of Defne, in Turkey's Hatay province, one of the worst-hit regions in the magnitude 7.8 magnitude quake that hit on Feb. 6, killing approximately 45, 000 people.

Meanwhile, the UN is sounding the alarm about a cholera outbreak in north-west Syria. Mudawiwill said 47,000 cases of cholera had been counted in the region.
