UN special rapporteur on Iran Javaid Rehman said on Thursday that given the continuing absence of domestic channels in terms of accountability, the international community has a responsibility to take action and address the human rights violations being seen in Iran. He also said he's calling for the "prompt" establishment of an "independent investigative mechanism" in all human rights violations leading up to and since the death of Mahsa Amini.

Rehman also said that he saw Amini as a "victim of state brutality" following her death while in the custody of the country's so-called morality police. He also said that despite several reports issued by state officials asserting no misconduct, in his view the investigations into her death have "failed the minimum requirements for impartiality and independence."

Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman who died after falling into a coma in police custody, was held for apparently not wearing her hijab properly according to the rigidly enforced Islamic Penal Code.

This past weekend, anti-government protests erupted at several universities in Tehran amid heavy security. The protests in the country began at first about the country's mandatory hijab, but have grown as a challenge to the Islamic Republic.
