Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have broken their commitment to create a watchdog with the power to compel evidence related to human rights abuse allegations linked to Canadian companies with international operations, including mining corporations.

Three years after the announcement of the creation of this ombudsperson, the office will soon be opening but without the promised powers to compel witnesses and documents.
