Ukrainian forces have liberated 41 settlements as they advance through the south of the country, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday.

"Today we have good news from the south," he said in an evening video address. "There are already dozens of Ukrainian flags returning to their rightful place within the scope of the ongoing defence operation. Forty-one settlements have been liberated. I thank all our heroes who make the advances possible."

Video obtained by Reuters showed Ukrainian soldiers with a Ukrainian flag in the village of Kyselivka in the Kherson region.

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Russia's announcement to withdraw its troops from Kherson was a “significant military milestone for the Ukrainians" during a briefing at the White House.

Ukraine's defence minister said it would take Russia at least a week to withdraw its troops from the southern city of Kherson and that winter would slow down battlefield operations, giving both sides a chance to regroup.

Russian-installed officials evacuated residents from the Kherson region after Moscow ordered one of the war's biggest retreats.
