After more than 250 Ukrainian fighters surrendered to Russian forces at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, Ukraine said on Tuesday it had ordered its full garrison to evacuate, bringing an apparent end to the bloodiest battle in Europe for decades.

More than 50 wounded troops were taken from Azovstal to a hospital in the Russian-controlled town of Novoazovsk on Monday, and more than 210 others were taken to the town of Olenivka in an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists. Some 600 troops were believed to have still been inside the steel plant.

“Nothing good will come out of it, because we don’t know how the Russians will treat the Ukrainian soldiers,” said one resident from Kyiv. “Actually, we do know, we’ve already seen that in Bucha, Irpin and other towns.”

Ukrainian troops say they held out in Azovstal for 82 days, buying time for the rest of Ukraine to battle Russian forces and secure Western arms needed to withstand Russia's assault.

Mariupol is now in ruins and Ukraine says tens of thousands of people in the city have been killed.
