As Russian forces pressed forward in their weeks-long drive to encircle and capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, shells were also hitting the neighbouring settlement of Chasiv Yar.

A supermarket was on fire on Monday, and constant explosions could be heard in the town.

Video captured in Bakhmut on Monday shows the damage caused to buildings by strikes across the city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.

Local residents can be seen walking in streets past wrecked buildings as loud explosions and gunfire sounded in the background.

A soldier recording a video, obtained by Reuters, said: "The city is on fire. The enemy pushes on. Ukraine will live. Putin is a ******."
