Fighting intensifies near Ukraine’s Bakhmut, a key Russian target

Fighting has intensified near the city of Bakhmut, a key target of Russian armed forces in their invasion of Ukraine.

Russian forces have repeatedly tried to seize Bakhmut, which sits on a main road leading to the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Both are situated in the Donbas region, which is highly important to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s military reported heavy shelling of a number of eastern frontline villages near Bakhmut.

“There is a lot going on, it is very fast. And all the battalions have casualties and you need to treat them fast,” said one Ukrainian military paramedic who is situated in the region.
