Russian forces have withdrawn from the strategically important Ukrainian town of Lyman in the Donetsk region.
It is served as a logistics and transport hub for Moscow, connecting eastern Ukraine to the north.
The Russian Defence Ministry says it made the move to avoid its troops being encircled by Ukrainian forces.
