Weather forecasters in the U.K. say there is a chance the country could break its all-time temperature record of 38.7 Celsius this weekend, as many parts of Europe are sweltering in the type of heat waves that are becoming more and more familiar.
In Britain, an extreme heat warning is already in effect, but the country’s top officials are on the verge of declaring its first-ever national heatwave emergency, as the temperature soars and people are at risk of illness or even death.
Since records began in 1884, the U.K.’s 10 hottest years have all happened in the past two decades. Climate scientists worry that scorching summer days like these could soon become all too common. Redmond Shannon reports from London.
