UK asylum backlog tops 160,000 for first time since current records began

More than 160,000 asylum seekers were waiting for an initial decision on their claim at the end of December - up 60% for the same period in 2021. The figures have been released as Rishi Sunak's government plans a new questionnaire to speed up the process.
