Asylum applications backlog leaves Afghan interpreter, family in limbo

After fleeing the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, a former interpreter for the Canadian Forces, and his family, are stuck in Ukraine, waiting in anguish for the Canadian government to grant him and his family asylum.

Jawed Ahmad Haqmal filed his family’s claim as soon as a special immigration project was launched by Canada.

But a backlog of applications has left him and his family to fend for themselves. Crystal Goomansingh reports.
