A caribou herd, known as the Klinse-Za herd, appears to have come back from the brink of extinction as a result of the efforts of two First Nations communities in British Columbia, Canada.

The West Moberly and Saulteau First Nations created a sanctuary for the mountain caribou, which has since grown roughly triple its original size. When the project began in 2013, according to National Geographic, the herd only had 38 caribou remaining. It has since tripled to 114.

"I used to work in oil and gas. You know, a lot of that stuff where we were really extracting resources," said Starr Gauthier, who helps at the sanctuary. "So to be a part of something that is really opposite that, now I can go to bed at night and be like, yes, I am contributing to this."

According to reports, those at the sanctuary volunteer to help with picking food for the caribou to eat, guarding the pens and even assist with predator reduction.
