Speaking during a press conference in Ottawa on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the newly-released interim report regarding foreign interference in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections.
Trudeau commended Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue for her work, but said “with confidence” that the previous elections were “decided by Canadians.” He also acknowledged the reported erosion of public trust in Canada’s democracy, and said that the report will “reassure Canadians” that work will continue to be done to prevent interference from foreign countries.
In separate remarks from Canada’s parliament later in the day, Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc reiterated Trudeau’s statement and said that is was important to work together to “uphold Canadian trust in our democratic institutions” as countries around the world grapple with foreign interference threats.
LeBlanc also added that the feds have been working to ensure that intelligence and information sharing of highly sensitive data is improved for the future, which he says requires a series of “very rigorous protocols” for security purposes.
