Trudeau defends Canada’s military spending after scolding from US senator

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended Canada’s military spending Thursday after criticism from Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan, stating that the government has spent “massively” on NORAD upgrades and has stepped up Canada’s NATO commitments.

“We invested massively in NORAD modernization just earlier this year, and we’re continuing to step up in our NATO commitments,” Trudeau said at a press conference in Summerford, N.L.

Sullivan criticized Canada’s contributions during a confirmation hearing for Lt.-Gen. Gregory Guillot, who is in line to become head of NORAD. “I hope the Canadians are watching your confirmation hearing,” Sullivan said to Gregory during the hearing, calling Canadian defence spending “incredibly disappointing.”

“They’re not very good at paying for missile defence either, even though we protect the whole North American continent,” he added.
