Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fielded questions on Friday about Toronto Liberal MP Han Dong for the first time since exclusive Global News reporting on Wednesday.

Trudeau spoke about the speech Dong gave about his resignation from the Liberal caucus two nights prior, referring people to his comments before speaking about foreign election interference, calling it a "very real challenge."

He added that Canada had given itself new "rigorous tools" to counter foreign interference and the government would continue to do everything necessary to keep Canadians safe.

National security sources told Global News that Dong spoke to a Chinese diplomat at the Toronto consulate in 2021 regarding the two Canadians known as the Two Michaels, who were at the time detained in China.
