Canada's New Democrat Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh took aim at the Trudeau government’s plan to stabilize grocery prices on Friday, calling it “ridiculous.” The plan was announced on Thursday.

“The reality is their plan, and I’m going to be firm here, is ridiculous,” Singh said.

“It’s been two years – 21 months, almost two years – since food prices have been elevated beyond the general inflation… and after two years, there plan is to meet with the CEOs and say ‘Please lower the prices. No, no lower the prices – please stabilize the prices.’”

The plan the government unveiled on Thursday has five planks, which include grocers introducing aggressive discounts, price freeze and price-matching campaigns, the establishment of a grocery task force and a new grocery code of conduct.

Singh says his party's plan would give the competition bureau more powers to crack down on price-gouging and price-fixing.
