The Paralympic Games officially kicked off in Tokyo on Tuesday with a spectacular fireworks display at the opening ceremony.

Dozens of people gathered outside the stadium to get a glimpse of the pyrotechnics and to take pictures.

The Paralympic flame was also transferred to a second cauldron located at the Tokyo waterfront after the flame ignited at the opening ceremony.

The cauldron will stay alight for the 13 days of the Paralympics, until Sept. 5, after being lit by Tomoki Tagawa, who was part of the Japanese men's 4x100 metres relay team who won bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics.

Like the Olympics, the Paralympics opening ceremony was held with no spectators and Paralympic events will take place generally without spectators due to the COVID-19 situation in the country.
