There are now three people who had critical roles in the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony no longer involved because of questionable behaviour, after director Kentaro Kobayashi was dismissed because of his past comments that made fun of the Holocaust.

Kobayashi's firing comes after a public outcry over a joke he made about the Holocaust as part of his comedy act in the 1990s, which recently resurfaced in domestic media.

The latest controversy comes as the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace, friendship, tolerance and hope, enters its final leg before being carried into the opening ceremony Friday.

Meanwhile, more athletes have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the case count to 87 Olympics personnel.

On Thursday, 2000 new infections were recorded in Tokyo.

Crystal Goomansingh has the latest.
