Tokyo Olympics: Fireworks light up night sky at Games closing ceremony

Fireworks lit up the night sky over Tokyo on Sunday, bringing about a climactic finale to an Olympic Games that were transformed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Tokyo doused its Olympic flame in a ceremony at the Olympic Stadium where athletes were already heading for the exits.

The Tokyo Olympics were originally intended to show Japan’s recovery from a devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in 2011, but had to be postponed for a year due to the ongoing health crisis.

Held without spectators and with growing concerns about COVID-19 variants, organizers said the Games would serve as a symbol of the world’s triumph over the pandemic.
