The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday it has convened a Marine Board of Investigation into the cause of the implosion of a tourist submersible while on a dive to explore the wreck of the Titanic.
Capt. Jason Neubauer, chief investigator for the U.S. Coast Guard, said the investigation into what happened to OceanGate’s Titan submersible was in the early “evidence gathering” stages and provided few details about the recovery efforts.
“We are communicating with family members — and I’m not getting into the details of the recovery operations — but we are taking all precautions on site if we are to encounter any human remains," he said.
On Thursday, after a frantic search for the submersible, the Coast Guard said it had found debris belonging to Titan near the famous ocean liner and that all passengers are presumed dead.
The RCMP and Canada’s Transportation Safety Board are also investigating.
