Clifford Harvey, the director of marine investigations at Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB), said on Saturday the agency has received “full co-operation” from those aboard the Polar Prince, the Canadian-flagged ship that was acting as the support ship for the Titan submersible, as it investigates what led to the disaster that claimed the lives of five people.

Canada’s TSB and the RCMP both announced on Saturday that they had launched investigations into the events leading up to the tragedy aboard the submersible.

The Polar Prince arrived in St. John’s, N.L, on Saturday morning after travelling approximately 700 kilometres from the site of the of a massive international search for the Titan.

On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard said a debris field found by searchers near the Titanic shipwreck was wreckage from the missing submersible and that it was consistent with a “catastrophic implosion” of the vessel.

RCMP Supt. Kent Osmond said the force’s investigation would determine whether a “full investigation” would be warranted. He said there was “no suspicion of any criminal activity” but that investigators were tasked with determining whether “anything contributed to their deaths that may lead us down a criminal path.”
