A TikTok video advertising a 200 square foot bachelor suite at the Lotus Hotel in Vancouver's Downtown East side has stirred controversy over the up to $2,000 monthly price tag in the building.

The since-removed video, which takes viewers on a virtual tour of the single-room occupancy (SRO) suite, stirred backlash after going viral and has reignited concern among locals about ever-increasing rental prices.

“That’s way too much for 200 square feet,” said resident resident Sean Esser, who pays $1,300 for a similar unit. “I can’t even believe how much I pay and I know it’s quite an expensive city,” he added.

Earlier this week, online rental unit website Rentals.ca reported the average monthly price for a one-bedroom apartment in the city had surpassed $3,000 per month.
