Thousands protest in Madrid against Colombian government, police violence

Thousands of Colombians residing in Madrid joined forces with locals to march through Spain's capital on Saturday, protesting the government of President Ivan Duque and the police violence used to quell street protests in the Andean country.

Demonstrations in Colombia began last week, fuelled by outrage at a government plan to raise sales taxes. That proposal was cancelled, but protesters' demands now include a basic income and the withdrawal of a long-debated health reform that opponents say is too vague to correct inequalities.

“Police have killed 37 people, more than 900 wounded, more than 200 people wounded by bullets,” one protester said, while another stated “the only thing we want is the Colombian people to be heard around the globe.”

The human rights ombudsman has reported 26 people killed since protests began, but says seven were unrelated to the marches themselves. Advocacy group Human Rights Watch has reports of 36 deaths and calls the police violence "alarming.”
