A gas truck explosion engulfed a residential and commercial area in Kenya's Nairobi on Thursday just before midnight, killing three and injuring more than 300 people.

Philip Awinyo Jeremiah reached for his phone to film the plumes of smoke from his nearby apartment building, flames shooting feet into the air as residents screamed.

He told Reuters on Friday that he and his mother were frightened by the explosions, adding that his mother thought "the world was ending."

Kenya's government spokesperson said on Friday "corruption" and a lack of enforcement of gas regulations led to the tragedy, while authorities would find and prosecute those responsible for the explosion.
