A gas explosion rock the Sicilian town of Ravanusa over the weekend, as rescue crews continued to work to pull bodies from the rubble of collapsed buildings Monday morning.

Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari confirmed seven victims from the tragedy with two people still missing. Meanwhile, two people were pulled alive from the debris on Sunday.

In the explosion late on Saturday, four houses collapsed and another three were damaged, authorities said, adding the blast was likely triggered by a gas leak from the town's pipes, although an investigation was underway to confirm the cause.

Gas grid operator Italgas expressed its sorrow and condolences to people in Ravanusa. It said its emergency service had received no reports of gas leaks last week.
