The reverberations of Mt. Tambora’s devastating eruption on April 5, 1815, went far beyond causing the deaths of tens of thousands of Indonesians.

This two-century-old catastrophe also triggered global food shortages, an economic depression, the rampant spread of disease, a cultural art movement, and — due to mass weather pattern changes— resulted in what many refer to today as “The Year Without a Summer.”
