Taiwan residents largely unfazed by Chinese military drills: “I’m unafraid”

Taiwan residents were largely indifferent to China’s latest round of military drills near the island on Saturday, in what is believed to be an angry response to Taiwan’s Vice President Villiam Lai visiting the United States.

One local resident said she was “unafraid” by the show of force from China, affirming her trust that the U.S. would come to Taiwan’s defence.

“Although Taiwan is not being officially recognized by the international community, we are important because we have a few top global companies, such as TSMC,” said another resident. “Taiwan now has quite a good reputation, so I think they (China) will not attack us just like that.”

Taiwan’s defence ministry said that it had detected 42 Chinese aircraft and eight ships involved in drills around the island as of Saturday morning.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory despite the strong objections from the island’s government.
