Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth is recommending Surrey, B.C., continue the transition to the Surrey Police Service, concluding a move away from the RCMP ensures public safety for people in the city.
To manage the costs of the transition to the Surrey Police Service, the province will be offering financial assistance to protect Surrey taxpayers.
Farnworth has long said the decision was up to the community and would not be providing any financial help for the transition.
The recommendation comes after a systematic report by the director of police services concerning plans put forward by the City of Surrey, RCMP and the Surrey Police Service.
