Stephen Dorrell, the former health secretary, has admitted that senior doctors "have a point" in asking for a pay ris,e but a 35% rise is not affordable.

Consultants are to start voting on whether to strike in the continuing dispute over pay in the health service.

The British Medical Association has claimed their take-home pay had declined by 35% since 2008/09.
