The conflict in Sudan has created a serious humanitarian emergency in neighbouring South Sudan. About 300,000 people have crossed the border to escape the fighting and there are not enough resources to accomodate them.

Most of the refugees are South Sudanese citizens who have been living in Sudan, and they are returning to a country that is already experiencing serious challenges.

South Sudan is one of the world's poorest countries and since it gained independence from Sudan in 2011, it has been fragile. It has had its own violent conflicts and has been severly impacted by climate change - long droughts and devastating floods.

The UN agencies on the ground say there is not enough food and the refugees who've recently arrived are going hungry - some families going days without meals.
