September 4, 2023: Putin, Erdogan discuss grain, Ukraine’s new defense minister, India moon rover, Burning Man, Spain
1. President Vladimir Putin told Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan on Monday that Russia was open to discussions about the Black Sea grain deal, an agreement that helped get Ukraine's grain to market and thus ease a global food crisis.
2. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has proposed Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine's main privatisation agency, to serve as the country's wartime defence minister. Umerov's candidacy must be approved by parliament before he is appointed.
3. India switched off its moon rover, the first craft to reach the lunar south pole, after it completed its two-week assignment conducting experiments, the country's space agency said.
4. Thousands of Burning Man attendees partied hard on Sunday despite downpours that turned the Nevada desert where the annual arts and music festival takes place into a sea of sticky mud and led officials to order the multitudes to shelter in place.
5. Two people died and two were missing as torrential rains caused heavy flooding in central Spain on Sunday and early on Monday, shutting roads, subway lines and high-speed train connections, authorities said.
