The government has hailed a "major step in our plan to stop the boats" after the Commons passed Rishi Sunak's Rwanda bill.

It survived the threat of a rebellion by some Tory MPs who felt it wasn't tough enough.

The legislation now heads from the Commons to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.
