The Kremlin warned the United States against exerting pressure on Moscow Thursday after Washington proposed a possible prisoner swap for American basketball star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan.
A person familiar with the matter has said the U.S. government had proposed trading convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Whelan and Griner.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that “no agreements have been finalized” and said prisoner swaps were typically negotiated discreetly behind the scenes. Jennifer Johnson reports
