The US government is reported to have offered to free Viktor Bout, a notorious Russian arms dealer, in exchange for basketball star Brittney Griner and former US marine Paul Whelan, both of whom are being held by the Russian authorities.
Bout, dubbed the "Merchant of Death" is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US.
