Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday that Moscow was ready to discuss the prisoner exchanges with Washington in relation to U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner and American Paul Whelan.

Washington has offered to exchange Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout for Griner and Whelan, according to reports.

The comments come a day after a Russian court sentenced Griner to nine years in prison for drug charges after Russian authorities said they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken again stressed that the sentence "further compounds the injustice" that Griner was facing and said, based on Lavrov's comments, officials would engage through established channels to pursue the release of Griner and Whelan.
