The European Union (EU) will work to ensure Russian gas giant Gazprom's decision to cut supplies to Poland and Bulgaria has the least possible impact on consumers, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday.

Moscow says the gas cut-off is to enforce its demand for payment in roubles, needed to shield its economy from international sanctions over the war in Ukraine. Von der Leyen said at a news conference in Brussels that the Kremlin had failed to "sow division" amongst the EU's member states and that they were working to overcome the shortfall.

Meanwhile, residents in Warsaw, Poland, as well as in St. Petersburg, Russia, reacted to this news – and what it means for consumers.
