Russia's Gazprom is supplying as much gas to Europe as possible, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday, adding that sanctions-driven technical issues with equipment were preventing Gazprom from exporting more.

Russia delivered less gas to Europe on Wednesday in a further escalation of an energy stand-off between Moscow and the European Union (EU), which will make it harder and costlier for the bloc to fill up storage ahead of the winter heating season.

The cut in supplies, flagged by Gazprom earlier this week, has reduced the capacity of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline - the major delivery route to Europe for Russian gas - to a fifth of its capacity, as Russia claims another gas turbine needed a repair.

In Europe, the German city of Augbsurg is one of many around the region to have rolled out a series of energy savings measures to cut down costs as well as set an example to society and contribute to a nationwide campaign to save gas, to ensure the country has enough to get it through the winter in preparation for a possible complete cut-off of gas.

"We want to show the Augsburg citizens that we could be facing really hard times," Augsburg mayor Eva Weber said. "And we all need to look to really save energy."
