Speaking in front of the European Union (EU) Parliament on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted the resilience of democracy.

In launching his invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin had sought to weaken the EU and NATO, but he miscalculated how this decision would bring the international community together, Trudeau said.

“What he has never understood, is that the rigors of debate – that forceful civic engagement – is what makes us strong and that democracy at its best will always be stronger than authoritarianism,” he said.

Trudeau encouraged European countries to continue sending military aid and to start thinking about “investing to rebuild Ukraine” after the war.
