Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Gov. Gen. Mary Simon attended the unveiling of a site selection ceremony for a residential schools national monument on Tuesday.

"This national monument will stand as a tribute to the lost Indigenous children, First Nations, Inuit and Metis. It will stand as a reminder that Indigenous voices are strong and it stands as another step Canada is taking toward reconciliation," said Simon.

Canada’s residential school system locked away more than 150,000 Indigenous children, ripping them from their families and communities in an effort to eras Indigenous cultural identity. Thousands died from abuse, disease and malnutrition, and countless more were subjected to sickening physical and sexual violence by priests and nuns.

An unknown number never returned home, and last July, Pope Francis affirmed what survivors and their families have been saying for decades, calling the residential schools an act of “genocide.”
