Renewed Canadian support comes at crucial time in Russia-Ukraine war

Canada’s announcement of new support for Ukraine comes at a crucial time in the conflict with Russia.

After rapid Russian gains at the onset of the war, Ukrainian forces made steady progress in regaining territory. However, since the start of 2023, progress has slowed, and Russian forces are entrenched along much of eastern Ukraine and Crimea.

At the start of the war, some had thought Russia might claim a quick victory, but Ukraine has had the support of countries like Canada and the U.S. And Ukraine has heavily relied on that support.

Suzanne Loftus, a research fellow at the Quincy Institute’s Eurasia program, talks with Farah Nasser about where the conflict stands at the 15-month mark, the importance of Western support for Ukraine, and the latest on the collapsed Kakhovka dam.
