The body of former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney arrived in Montreal on Thursday morning and was laid in repose in Saint Patrick's Basilica, where family and close friends of the beloved politician could visit Mulroney's coffin and pay respects from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET.

This comes ahead of Mulroney's official state funeral. The state funeral for the Mulroney, who died on Feb. 29 at the age of 84, in Florida, will be held on March 23, at Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, alongside other Canadian political leaders, paid tribute to the late former prime minister in Ottawa's House of Commons. Mulroney's three sons — Ben, Mark, and Nicholas Mulroney — also expressed their gratitude for the tributes heard in the House.

A Progressive Conservative, Mulroney led the country from 1984 to 1993. Born in Baie-Comeau, Que., in 1939, he will be remembered as one of Canada’s most prominent political figures.
