Brian Mulroney’s childhood friend reflects on decades-long friendship

Walter Bisson, a childhood friend of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, sat down with Global’s Mike Armstrong this week to reflect on his decades-long friendship with the former Canadian leader.

“He was always helpful,” he said, recalling his friend as a young man.
Bisson says Mulroney aspired to enter politics even as a teenager and had begun considering his career path at an early age, musing that he might become a lawyer.

He said Mulroney would pick up the phone every time Bisson called him, no matter where he was or who he was with.

“He cared, he really cared,” Bisson said, holding back tears.

Mulroney was laid to rest Saturday in a state funeral at Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica. He died last month at age 84.
