Record rainfall caused flash floods early Tuesday in parts of St. Louis, Miss., which was so heavy, it broke the city’s daily rainfall record.

The record was last set in August 1915, and with this rainfall, that record broke in just five hours.

According to the St. Louis National Weather Service, the city recorded 8.06 inches (20.4 cm) of rain.

At least four state highways and several other major roads were closed as a result of the flooding, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The flooding inundated roadways, shutting down more than two dozen sections of major roads that crisscross the area.

Local authorities urged residents to stay home as water levels rose, leaving cars and motorists stranded.
