Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Thursday, reaction, tributes and fond memories of Her Majesty poured in from world leaders and celebrities all around the globe.

Musician Elton John, who was knighted by the Queen in 1998, paid tribute during his show in Toronto, Ont. on Thursday evening.

“I feel very sad that she won't be there with me anymore but I'm glad she's at peace, I'm glad she's at rest. And she deserves it. She's worked bloody hard…her spirit lives on and we celebrate her life tonight with music,” he said before playing the piano.

Others, like former British prime minister Theresa May, shared personal stories as she recalled dropping cheese in front of the queen during a picnic at Balmoral Castle.

"I picked up the cheese, put it on the plate, and put it on the table. And I turned around to see that my every move had been watched very carefully by Her Majesty the queen."

"I looked at her, she looked at me, and she just smiled," May said.

"And the cheese remained on the table."
