World leaders have expressed a range of emotions following reports from Russian prison officials on Friday about the death of Alexei Navalny, the fiercest critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. President, Canada’s Prime Minister, Ukraine’s President, NATO’s General Secretary have all issued statements highlighting Navalny’s courage in the face of adversity and condemning Putin for his brutality.
“Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death... What has happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin’s brutality,” U.S. President, Joe Biden, said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Navalny an “extraordinary fighter for human rights, for democracy and someone who was standing up for the Russian people — standing up with extraordinary courage for a better future for Russia and for Russians.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Berlin, said, "Obviously, he was killed by Putin, like thousands of others who have been tormented, tortured because of this one person.”
However, there has been no official confirmation of these reports from Navalny’s legal team.
