Quebec's premier says pandemic-related restrictions need to stay despite the risk they bring to people's mental health.

Francois Legault told reporters Monday that the first focus of his government in the wake of the deadly sword attack this past weekend in Quebec City is providing support to the families of the victims, as well as addressing the "shock" of Quebecers upon learning of the news

Two people are dead and five others injured following a stabbing rampage in Quebec City on Saturday night.

The suspect has been identified as Carl Girouard from Sainte-Thérèse, north of Montreal.

Legault also told reporters today the government's partial lockdown orders covering much of the province are leading people to become more isolated, which he said leads to more mental health issues.

But the premier says his government has no choice given the fact health authorities continue to report around 1,000 new COVID-19 infections a day.
