Prosecutor says suspect in German car attack was drunk, terrorism not a motive

Peter Fritzen, the leading chief prosecutor in the case against a man suspected of killing at least four people Tuesday, said the man was drunk when he drove into a group of people in a pedestrian zone in southwest Germany.

Fritzen said the 51-year-old had drank a significant amount of alcohol beforehand.
A nine-month-old baby was among those killed and up to 15 others were injured when the man’s speeding SUV hit shoppers in the German city of Trier, in what authorities said appeared to be a deliberate act.

The man is facing four counts of murder, as well as charges dangerous bodily injury.
Fritzen said there were “no indications that the motive is of a terrorist, political or religious nature.”
