At an emergency summit in neighbouring Nigeria, leaders of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS have given Niger’s coup leaders one week to reinstate the president.
The bloc says if they fail to do so, military action would be an option.
Meanwhile, thousands of coup supporters gathered in the capital Niamey, and some attacked the embassy gates of the former colonial power France.
Al Jazeera's Sara Khairat reports.
