Pope Francis called on the faithful not to ignore the suffering and loneliness of others as he presided over a Palm Sunday service at the Vatican.

The pontiff, 86, who was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Saturday following a bout of bronchitis, said of those who are suffering: “Today their numbers are legion. Entire peoples are exploited and abandoned.”

“Migrants are no longer faces but numbers, prisoners are disowned; people are written off as problems,” he continued.

The pope, who marked the 10th anniversary of his pontificate in March, has long highlighted the plight of the poor and of migrants.

Palm Sunday marks the day that the Bible says Jesus rode into Jerusalem the week before Christians believe he rose from the dead following his crucifixion.
